I'm just about to start the free-to-play Genshin Impact (2020 — PC, PS4, Switch, phones), which I’ve heard is a brilliant exploration game styled after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017 — Switch). Eurogamer contributor Sayem Ahmed (@SayemAhmd) wrote about what makes it so good here.
I can’t wait to start, but it’s also got me thinking about all the free games I’ve played over the years, and how many hundreds of hours I got out of them. Valve’s team shooter Team Fortress 2 (2007 — PC, Xbox 360) consumed my late teens, but it’s not something I could really recommend people play anymore.
So, what free games are worth playing right now? Comment below, and we’ll build up a list. Off the top of my head, the two that spring to mind are:
Call of Duty: Warzone (2020 — PC, Xbox One, PS4), which is the best battle royale game around, in my opinion.
Destiny 2 (2017 — PC, Xbox One, PS4), a ridiculously massive shooter with some of the best gun handling ever created.
Agree with Spellbreak, the mechanics are really inspired, similar to the elemental combat in Genshin, though I don’t think there was enough character there to keep me invested so may check the update.
Since it’s October, one of the best free games is Doki Doki Literature Club!
Not too bad. There's an arena mode that's casual, plus a tutorials and training modes. It will take a while to get good but you should be having fun before then. There's over 100 gods/characters to choose from.
Spellbreak is battle royale with an Avatar: The Last Airbender-like spin and it’s fantastic. It’s also getting its first big update next week.

Thanks for reminding me - been on my list for. Will make sure I check it out
Completely forgot about this! Remember seeing it ages ago and thinking it looked cool. What's the update adding?
TDM, Halloween cosmetics, and more items to find in the game. I’m a sucker for Halloween cosmetics in basically every game.
I'm a fan of Smite. Been playing for years. They just announced a TMNT skin/battle pass as well lol.
How hard is it to get into? Always thought I'd just be terrible and bounce off it
