Free games that are genuinely worth playing?

I'm just about to start the free-to-play Genshin Impact (2020 — PC, PS4, Switch, phones), which I’ve heard is a brilliant exploration game styled after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017 — Switch). Eurogamer contributor Sayem Ahmed (@SayemAhmd) wrote about what makes it so good here.

I can’t wait to start, but it’s also got me thinking about all the free games I’ve played over the years, and how many hundreds of hours I got out of them. Valve’s team shooter Team Fortress 2 (2007 — PC, Xbox 360) consumed my late teens, but it’s not something I could really recommend people play anymore.

So, what free games are worth playing right now? Comment below, and we’ll build up a list. Off the top of my head, the two that spring to mind are:

  1. Call of Duty: Warzone (2020 — PC, Xbox One, PS4), which is the best battle royale game around, in my opinion.

  2. Destiny 2 (2017 — PC, Xbox One, PS4), a ridiculously massive shooter with some of the best gun handling ever created.
